Course Objectives

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of a deck crew member.

  • Learn about vessel maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Gain practical experience in deck operations and handling.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • No prior maritime experience required, but a basic understanding of boating is beneficial.

Course Duration

  • Theory and Practical: 5 days (approximately 40 hours).

  1. Introduction to the Maritime Industry
    • Overview of the maritime sector and types of vessels.
    • Roles and responsibilities of deck crew members.
    • Career pathways and opportunities in the maritime industry.
  2. Seamanship Skills
    • Basic navigation and chart work.
    • Knots, splices, and rope handling.
    • Mooring and anchoring procedures.
    • Use of deck equipment and machinery.
  3. Vessel Maintenance
    • Routine maintenance tasks and procedures.
    • Cleaning and upkeep of the vessel.
    • Basic engine and equipment checks.
    • Painting, varnishing, and corrosion prevention.
  4. Safety Procedures
    • Personal safety equipment and usage.
    • Emergency procedures and drills.
    • Firefighting techniques and equipment.
    • Man overboard recovery and first aid basics.
  5. Deck Operations
    • Handling and launching of tenders and lifeboats.
    • Cargo handling and stowage.
    • Watchkeeping duties and responsibilities.
    • Communication and teamwork on deck.
  6. Practical On-Water Training
    • Hands-on practice with mooring and anchoring.
    • Navigation exercises and watchkeeping.
    • Emergency drills and safety procedure execution.
    • Deck equipment operation and maintenance tasks.

Assessment

  • Theory Exam: Multiple-choice questions covering seamanship, safety procedures, and deck operations.
  • Practical Exam: Hands-on assessment of seamanship skills, safety procedures, and deck operations.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and exams, students will receive the ICT International Captain Training Academy Deck Crew certificate
